This week we will discuss DIY (Do it yourself projects) that can be completed around the house and share some common house repairs that can be fixed with out a profressional.

Thematic Activity- DIY Projects (15 mins)

Did you know that DIY or  D-I-Y Means "Do it yourself?" You can find many examples online what you can DIY at home. Some projects require a lot of time, others do not. On the other hand, some projects require so much supplies and others you can use some things around the house.

Share some of your experiences here are some prompts below to help you get started:

  • Have you ever completed a DIY Project?
  • What project was it?
  • Did someone help you?
  • How long did it take to complete?
  • Do you have the project near you?
  • Can you show the project to the group?
  • If you cant show the project, explain what supplies you needed for it.

If you need some inspiration for your next DIY Project, you can take a look at the examples on this page.

Did you find any of those interesting? You can also do your own search as a group- look for video's  and images.

Thematic Activity-DIY-Fixing things in the Kitchen (15 mins)

Did you know that common kitchen problems can be fixed without calling a professional? This can save you time and money, plus the more you know about house repairs you can than pass on this information to others.

Share some experience or some knowledge about this topic.

  • Open up the zoom white board
  • Draw a line down the middle
  • On one side, take notes of problems that you've witnessed or know that can happen in the kitchen
  • And on the other side, take notes of who you called to fix them or what you had to buy at the store to solve the problem.

Creating this list may take a while, but what we are identifying here is steps you can take to solve a problem.

See the example below:

My Sink is clogged- I can either call the plummer or try to buy some drain de-clogger from the store. If the de-clogger doesnt seem to work, maybe I can find some videos on youtube that can help. If all fails, I can call the plumber and pay $100 per hour.

Look up some videos  or articles of how to fix the problems that you listed on the zoom white board. You may have a problem with the freezer, microwave or stove and much more.

Video Examples:

How to fix a leaking faucet

Unclog a sink

Client-led Exercise (5 mins.)

Have a volunteer lead the group in 5 minutes of stretching

Show & Share (10 min)

Share a plant from your home. It can be inside, online or outside.

Skills - Phonics Letter A

What does the letter A sound like? Use this practice sheet to write/draw the letter A on the Zoom White board. Think of lots of words that start with the letter A and have fun with it!

What are some common life skills that you have to be a good worker? (10 mins)

Presenters: Discuss and brainstorm using the whiteboard option on zoom to keep track of responses.

If you were looking into hiring someone new, what life skills would you like them to have? The same life skills as you? Or different life skills?

Check In (5 min):

We are halfway through the week, how is this week going for you?

Thematic Activity-Fixing things in the Restroom (15 mins)

Yesterday we talked about fixing things in the kitchen, but some simillar situations can happen in the restroom/bathroom. Right? You can have a clogged shower drain, clogged toliet, electrical issues or shower head problems.

Take the scenarios below and as a group look for ideas online, such as videos and articles on how to solve the problem. Department stores such as lowe's, home depot and ace hardware also may have some resources online.

Scene 1:

The toliet water keeps running long after you flush. It's been doing this for about a week now and your not sure why it started. You know you don't want to spend over $300 for a plumber to come. What can you do next?

Scene 2:

The light switch in the restroom turns on the light and the fan at the same time. The fan hasnt been moving and makes a loud buzzing sound. The light is working, what do you think you can do next to solve the fan issue?

Scene 3:

The shower drain is clogged, you think nothing of it until you realized all the junk starts coming up when you are taking a shower. What do you do next to solve this problem?

Client-led Exercise  (5 min)

Have a volunteer lead the group in 5 minutes of stretching

Show & Share (10 min):

Share a beautiful photo of the sky. Sunset, sunrise, beautiful clouds, a storm, any sort of visual of the sky or sky-related.

Skills- Math (10 mins)

  • Here is another math practice, this time decimal to percent. Remember, all numbers can be converted into different fractions, percentages and more. Use this sheet to complete each question as a team.
  • At the top of the sheet it provides some instructions and an example in box one. You can use the calculator option on phones, tablets, computers, laptops or even google search a calculator to help everyone visualize the process

Thematic Activity-Gardening Projects

Did you know that some vegetables can be planted inside? This makes it a great space saver and DIY Project. It can save time to the grocery store, its a cool experience to see  things grow right before your eyes. What's even more fascinating is that some veggies only need water to continue growing! No soil needed.

What do you think you can grow? Create a list with the zoom whiteboard and see how many were mentioned in this article.

If you have space to grow outside, you can use things around the house to help get you started.

  • You can start to harvest seeds indoors in early spring than transplant them into the outdoors once spring is in full action
  • You can make seed starters from newspaper and toliet paper rolls, a great way to reuse what you have and its bio-degradable.
  • You can reuse old plastic to-go containers from the resturants to start a mini succulent garden.

One of the best things you can do to prepare your out door garden is to have fun, be interested and curious. What are you inspired too grow?

Recap Yesterday (3 min)

What did you learn?

Thematic Activity- Things they dont teach you in school

We've been talking a lot about DIY Projects, fixing things around the home and a bit about gardening. A lot of what we learned or reviewed came from life experiences and doing our own research-they dont teach you these things in school-unless you go to a certified employment certificate program in college.

  • Can you think of some life skills or categories of things that you know about, that you had to learn as you were an adult out of school?
  • Create a list using the zoom whiteboard and see where you may have some simillarities with others in the group.
  • Did you find any simillarities?
  • What surprised you about the list?
  • Was it hard to think of things?

Here are some examples of topics that you might have on the list or that you might want to explore:

  • How Credit Cards work
  • What is interest?
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Marketing
  • How to save or budget.
  • Survival Skills
  • Online Safety
  • Sales
  • How does insurance work?
  • What is investing?

Client-led Exercise (5 mins)

Show & Share (10 min)

What has been the best thing that has happened this year to you?

Skills-Using our imagination (10 mins)

You can create a short story but you have to use the words-yes, no, please and banana. The story must have a beginning, middle and end. No right or wrong answers. The main character must present more than one emotion, for example, happy sad, suprised and more. Use that imagination!
