Life Skills Story

** An X is an X Unless**

Tess makes her best time in the 50 freestyle swimming race. Nina is tripped up by Roman Numerals.

Read the entire story today or read half and finish it tomorrow.

(Although Discussion Questions were placed in our packet for today, please do them on Wednesday)

PRESENTERS: Read aloud with your group, or have some readers help. When reading aloud exaggerate tone and emotion somewhat to increase engagement.

Stop reading a few times to prompt participants to VISUALIZE what the words describe. This is an important part of learning to read well which is often challenging.

Universal Sign for Choking: Raise your hand in the participant panel or wave if you knew that there is a universal sign for choking.

Although this is a universal image, at times during the event of choking, it may be challenging for someone to hold their hands around their neck.

What you can look for:

  • Inability to talk
  • Difficulty breathing or noisy breathing
  • Squeaky sounds when trying to breathe
  • Cough, which may either be weak or forceful
  • Skin, lips and nails turning blue or dusky
  • Skin that is flushed, then turns pale or bluish in color
  • Loss of consciousness

Let’s have a discussion:

  • What is the Heimlich Maneuver?
  • Can a volunteer describe this to us?
  • Can a volunteer show us?
  • Have you seen someone preform the Heimlich maneuver?

Although you can find many resources online about how to perform this, where to become certified, you never know when you might need to use it. Check out this video.

(Presenter: Remember to use Captions, stop and pause every so often to be sure everyone is understanding the content in the video)
