Black History

This week, let's learn and talk about Black Inventors and important milestones in Black culture.

Did you know a Black man, Garrett Morgan, invented the The Three-Light Traffic Light?

This invention has allowed our traffic systems to run smoothly since the 1920's.

Hello, how are we?

Introduce the Week

Theme: Making choices toward wanted results

We will be learning how to predict what results we will get from different choices.

We will learn ways to talk that help us make choices in the world.

Skill Builder (10-15 min)

PRESENTERS: Play the video, then practice things an assertive person would say in each situation. Finally, work with your group to brainstorm ways assertive people can handle aggressive communication. Use the tips but come up with the language yourselves.

Examples of Assertive, Passive, and Aggressive statements

  • A store clerk serves a customer who got there after you
  • A server in a restaurant brings you food you didn't order
  • Your friend is teasing you in a mean way that is hurting your feelings
  • Your older sister gave you an overdue library book as a Christmas gift
  • Your roommate borrowed your tablet a week ago and still hasn't returned it

Tips to Respond to Aggressive Communicators

  • State that you don't respond to bullying or intimidation.
  • Request a speaking tone of voice.
  • Suggest a pause to restore calm
  • Restate what they are saying without any aggression yourself
