This week's skill is "Manual Skills" meaning with your hands

Thematic Media

How to Learn Something Every Day

Thematic Activity

Make your bucket list of things you'd like to learn.

Here are some areas to think about

  • Making things
  • Designing things
  • Learning information
  • Sharing experiences
  • Travel related learning

Body Break

Choose 2-4 of these and try them out

Skills Media

Manual skills are things you can do with your hands. Often these are related to fixing things or making things. But anything you use your hands to do is a manual skill, from playing a musical instrument to typing on a keyboard.

Makers Fair

People who make things by hand are called "makers" nowdays. Before factories most people had to make everything they used every day. Nowdays people make things for fun or just to explore their imaginations.

Skills Information

Tools are important for good projects and it's very important to know how to use tools safely

Public Art

Public Art in San Jose

Thematic Activity

PRESENTERS: Explain that different people have different ideas about what art is and whether it is helping, doing nothing, or causing problems.

If you choose to watch the OPINION video help your group understand that an opinion is not necessarily correct or accurate and that it usually includes how people FEEL, not just what they think.

It costs money to make public art. How much should a city spend on public art and how do we decide between things like art work, street repairs, transportation issues, and other things the city has to fund?

Here is one OPINION from Atlanta Georgia

Body Break

Choose 2-4 DIFFERENT ones and try them out

Skills Media

Chefs use their hands to do their jobs. Before you become a chef, you have to learn to PREP.

PRESENTERS: Please read aloud the written descriptions as they appear on screen

Skills Applied

Make a list (together or individually) of the things that you see people doing in your community that are manual skills. Think of the places you go, the things you drive past, the stuff you see on the local news, things you read about in the paper, people who come to your house and perform services. What are some of the jobs you see being done in your community that involve manual skills?

Do an internet search to find out if your town or city has any training available in these kinds of jobs. Good places to check are the local community colleges, adult education centers and the Employment Development Department

Do an internet search together to find out if your city or town is hiring right now in any area.

  • Search for the name of your town/city
  • Add "employment opportunities"
  • Or go to the city's web pages and look for the employment opportunities page there.

CPR skills are manual skills, meaning we do CPR with our hands

AED: Automated External Defribrilator is a more recent tool in the first aid kit

PRESENTERS: Discuss with your group how following instructions, on paper, from pictures, or from listening, is part of the skill set for CPR.

Thematic Activity

Review this list of steps for first aid on a cut.

With the list NOT SHOWN, try to restate the steps that were in the list.

Go back and look at the list. Did you remember all the steps? Did you remember them in order?

Thankfully, when we have a list of steps, we can refer back to it as we try to help someone.

Body Break

Choose 2-4 DIFFERENT ones and try them out

Skills Media

Here are instructions for giving first aid for a snake bite. Review them.

  1. Which steps do you think you could do now without any practice?
  2. Which steps do you think you might need to practice so that if you had to do it you would be ready?
  3. Which steps do you thing would be hard to learn, if any?
  4. What INFORMATION would you want to REMEMBER from these instructions?

Skills Information

ACE bandages are used frequently at home to treat things like sprains, especially with ankles. You can practice on yourself, which is kind of cool.

Nurses and doctors have to practice their bandaging skills. It's a manual skill that can really be useful.

Wrapping an ankle with an ACE bandage

Skills Applied

Look at these first aid tools.

  • Name as many as you can
  • Which ones do you already know how to use?
  • Which ones do you think you should LEARN to use?
  • Which ones can you practice on right away?

Fun Stuff

This video teaches us that we need to stay calm and relaxed if we want to remember things and do them in the correct order. That can be hard when we are in an emergency like first aid. So the best idea is to practice ahead of time and be prepared to take calm action.

Thematic Activity

Review this manual of California Workers Rights and see if you find anything that you didn't know. Start by reviewing the table of contents and choosing areas to investigate.

Skills Media

The skills we use to exercise our rights are

  • Social skills like we talked about earlier in September
  • Collaboration skills like we discussed in July
  • Communication tools like phones, emails, letters, and conversations
  • Courage like calling your city council member, speaking up for yourself with your boss, or even telling a family member that you want to change something that has always been a certain way.

Which skills are being shown in this video about asking for accommodations at work?

Skills Information

Sometimes the manual skills we need are worth practicing so we don't have to get distracted when we are doing something like having a tough conversation.

Which of these things do you need to practice so that when you do approach someone you feel confident?

  • Using your phone easily and quickly
  • Taking notes during a meeting
  • Reviewing your notes after a meeting
  • Preparing a list of the things you want to say before starting the conversation

Skills Applied

How to take notes.

Basic Note Taking-3 important steps

Notes are summaries, a short version of the important parts. This video explains how to SUMMARIZE quickly.

Can your group summarize this story using the 5 method from the video

  • Who?
  • What?
  • When?
  • Where?
  • Why?
  • HOW?

Review the Week

Movie Time

Two stories that show love and acceptance: Today you can watch both short films or one of the groups choice.

Hair Love: Oscar Award Winning Short Film by Sony Pictures Animations

After viewing Hair Love, ask the group to stop and reflect. Use the prompt below or let the conversation grow organically. Can you relate to the young girl in the video or her father? At some point we all struggle to look good and feel good with our hair. Maybe sometime within this pandemic, you sturggled with long hair or a DIY Hair Cut. What advice would you give a friends who may need some cheering up if they are having a bad hair day?

Two Strangers Who Meet Five Times: Award Winning Short Film

After viewing, Two Strangers, stop and reflect.

In a world full thousands of people, what is the likelihood that you would meet someone 5 times in your life? Maybe if you lived in the same city or went to the same school? But for these two gentelman, they were present in each others lives and many different life stages.

Do you remeber anyone from your past that you may have met on the wrong foot? Maybe a rude comment while in line, or someonething was as you passed by?

What take aways or life lessons can we see after watching this story?
