Remember July's Theme: Adapting
This week's skill is APPLYING answers.
We learned about listening carefully, asking questions, and confirming answers. This week we'll practice USING the answers we get when we ask questions.
Thematic Activities
Responding to Information
Watch this video about manners on public transportation BEFORE Covid.
PRESENTERS: Read the captions to the group and verbally describe what the video is showing. Pause if necessary for each point of manners.
Skills Media
Now let's see what actions we need to add for Covid safety
This video is about School Buses but it had ideas that could work for other kinds of shared transportation too.
Skills Information
Use question and confirming answer skills to make sure you can tell which of these ideas apply to you in program or in the community, and which do not.
PRESENTERS: Go over the following questions to help clarify which ideas apply to being safe in hope programs.
Skills Applied
Do the tasks in the video and see how well you do

Why Adapting?
From hope to home will be changing once summer is over. Please watch this video to hear about some of the differences so you can prepare and ADAPT to meet YOUR needs. More information will be coming this week and all through August.
We need to keep protecting ourselves even if the state is re-opening. Part of adapting is looking ahead and preventing problems before they happen.
Thematic Activity
How are we currently keeping up with SMART covid-prevention?
PRESENTERS: Go through the checklist in the link above and remind people to check their own behavior on these items.
We Have a Responsibility to Our Communities
IF you have any symptoms of illness, whether you WANT to go to program, or not, STAY HOME. The community of people you share your world with are all connected, all rely on one another. No one really does anything entirely without affecting someone else. That is why we need to be mindful of how healthy, or unhealthy, we feel.
On the other hand, thinking about being sick can make us wonder if we are sick even though we thought we felt great. It's a balance between being mindful and being reasonable.
Use a daily body scan to assess your sense of wellness.

What is going on in your communities? How can you use this information to plan program activities and be in your community in ways that are meaningful to you?
PRESENTERS: Review these resources and do searches with your group to find activities that are now possible again.
Skills Information
Signs to read and understand
Different places are going to have different rules posted. We need to read the signs and follow the guidelines of each place during re-opening.
PRESENTERS: Go over the meaning of each sign.
Skills Applied
If you owned this place, where would you put your signs?
So where should we LOOK for signs when we go to a community location?

Asking for Health Support
How to ask for help YOU want for your health goals, not just doing what other people tell you you're supposed to.
Review this list of things that make it hard to ask for help.
Think about the 8 dimensions of health. Do any of these barriers stop you from asking for help in these health issues?

Thematic Activity
Information resources in the Bay Area
PRESENTERS: Review these resources and explain to your group that they can ask for information of these providers and services.
Do You Know...
Skills Media
This video is about the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities. When you want to adapt you need information that you understand so you can use it. There are many sources of information and there are agencies that exist to help you get in a way you understand and can act on.
Skills Information
PRESENTERS: Go to the State Council web page here and explain that there is a sate-wide self-advocacy network that has regular meetings that you can look up and learn from.
Click on the SPEAKER icon next to the Packet and when the page loads, click "Listen" in the bar above to the left. Explain to your group that this a way that they can hear the written materials read aloud.
Skills Applied
Go the SARC home page and explore these links
PRESEnTERS: I have purposely NOT put the links in to this page so that you can SHOW the participants the process of clicking on links from the SARC web site. The point of this exploration is to encourage people to access the page for themselves.
Notice that there is no directory of SARC workers. Why is that? Can the clients get together and ask for that? If they are providing service coordination shouldn't their contact information be available?

Discussion Time
PRESENTERS: Depending on the size of your group either tell the group, or have a discussion, about the ideas in the video. Talk about how it feels to know that the online program may have to change. Explain that how the pandemic is going will affect how quickly we need to make these changes.
Movie Time
A woman who uses a wheelchair becomes an adventurer, climbing the Colorado Mountains with the help of a blind mountain climber.
OR
REview the Olympics Playlist for sports and Olympic highlights your group is interested in.
Share Special Olympics stories too.
Silliness
There is a funny TV show called Satruday Night Live where people do skits to make fun of things. In the Olympics they test athletes to make sure no one is taking performance improving drugs. This skit is about the opposite idea: All Drug Olympics where all the athletes take drugs. It's not real, just a joke. But they make it funny.
Choose a game to play from the Gameshow network. PRESENTERS- when you open the link wait for the promo images to clear and the game options to load.
