TODAY IS LABOR DAY!

NO PROGRAM TODAY, COME BACK TOMORROW! HAVE A RESTFUL DAY OFF!

Community & Civic Education

Tuesday, September 8, 2020

Check-In

Welcome back, everyone! Did you enjoy Labor Day? How did you spend it?

High Priority Vocabulary

Objective: read and write day abbreviations.

An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase. We use abbreviations all the time in reading, writing, and speaking. For example, many people often use the abbreviation “appt” instead of the full word “appointment” when they are writing. Acronyms are a specific type of abbreviation. Acronyms are made up from the initial letters of a phrase. For example, one acronym you probably already use is USA, which refers to the United States of America. Can you think of other abbreviations and acronyms?

Now look at “*Abbreviations: Days of the Week.” You should have received a printed copy of this.

At the top of the page, read the abbreviations for the days of the week. Then, write those abbreviations in the blank boxes at the top of the March calendar. Remember to write them down in the correct order!

Show & Share

Labor Day is a federal holiday which celebrates the labor movement and people who labor (or work). Labor unions are a big part of the labor movement. A labor union is a group of workers who work together to negotiate with their employers in order to protect their rights and improve their wages, benefits, and working conditions.

Have you ever been a member of or involved in a labor union? Do you (or have you ever) worked somewhere with a union? If you’ve never been involved with a union, do you know anyone which has? What’s their job?

Tomorrow’s show and share is about belonging to any kind of group. Bring any ID cards, membership pins or other objects that prove you are a member of a club or group to show us.

Body Break

Have you been drinking water throughout the day so far? If you have, it’s probably time to refill your cup. If you haven’t, it’s time to get a glass of water!

Life Skills Story: The Lucky Dog

PRESENTERS: Readers may have recieved a paper copy of the story.

In this week’s story, Mitch works hard all summer to save up money so that he can buy new clothes. However, before he can go shopping, he learns that a friend needs some help.

Read the full story today or read half and finish up tomorrow. Make sure to review the questions at the end of the story.

PRESENTERS: Remember these tips to improve reading skills. If YOU are reading the story aloud:

  • Use stronger emotional tones with your voice to signal what is happening in the story
  • Prompt learners to describe what they imagine as visuals for the story

If a learner is reading aloud for the group

  • Give a little more time than you instinctively want to for someone to guess at an unfamiliar word
  • If the learner reads fairly slowly, sum up the events for the group when they finish

Body Break

You know what to do!

Thematic Connection:  Comfort, Fit, & Condition

Two weeks ago, we talked about selecting the correct clothes for different seasons and for different weather (temperature and precipitation). Last week, we talked about formality and occasion. Certain activities and events require you to wear certain clothing. Not all types of clothing are appropriate for all occasions. This week, we are going to talk about comfort, fit, and condition

Objective: Identify clothes that are comfortable, fit you well, and are in good condition.

What makes some clothes uncomfortable to wear or fit poorly? How can you tell if your clothes are in bad condition? What about the reverse: what makes clothes comfortable and fit well? How can you tell if your clothes are in good condition?

PRESENTERS: Open this slide show and then share your screen: Clothes: Comfort, Fit, & Condition. Use these slides to discuss the above questions with the participants.

Participants should identify that clothes should not be too small or too big, talk about how different cuts and materials impact comfort, and discuss how stains, holes, and tears indicate that a piece of clothing is in bad condition.

Now, let’s play a game to practice!

Round #1: Grab a piece of clothing that you think is either very comfortable or very uncomfortable. Share with your group why you chose it.

Round #2:  Grab a piece of clothing that you think fits you well or a piece of clothing that you know fits you poorly. Share with your group why you chose it.

Round #3:  Grab a piece of clothing that is either in good condition or in bad condition. Share with your group why you chose it.

High Priority Vocabulary

PRESENTERS: This worksheet gives us an opportunity to teach using a resource to find information. The links below are related to each activity quadrant on the work sheet. But if your group needs to learn about internet searches you can do a shared internet search to show them how to find the resources. Use only the links that meet the needs of your particular learning group.

Don't know? Find out!

Work on *this worksheet together and use the links below to find the answers.

PRESENTERS: CTRL and the + on a keyboard will zoom in, CTRL and the - sign will zoom out, CTRL and ZERO will make it default size.

Show & Share

What organizations that aren't unions have you belonged to? Do you have any cards, badges, membership pins or other objects that prove you are a member of a club or group? Tell us about the clubs or groups you belong to or would want to join.

Tomorrow's Show & Share is about being new or different in a group. Think of a time when you had to get used to a group and they had to get used to you.

<Body Break> Make it count everybody. Remember your body is a loyal friend. Treat it right.

Life Skills Stories QUIZZZZZ!

Finish reading the Life Skills Story if you haven't yet. Then take *this quiz. You can go over the answers together.*

This story reminds us that we rely on one another. Does anyone have a story about a time a friend or loved one made a sacrifice to help you? What about a sacrifice you made to help someone else?

PRESENTERS: If people received the paper packet they have quiz questions on paper and can follow along at home. And you can CLICK on the document (mouse turns into a magnifier) to enlarge the text on the page.

(*Answers at the bottom of page)

Thematic Connection: Well Being and SYNERGY!

What does SYNERGY mean? Synergy is when things that are combined are even BETTER than what they would be if you had them individually. Food is a great example of synergy. So is team work!

Did you know...

  • When you eat beans OR rice OR corn you get some protein but if you eat them together your body gest even more protein out of ALL of them!
  • That when you cook greens your body can't get all the nutrients inside of them... but if you add mustard, your body CAN!
  • If you add a little bit of salt to something sweet, it will taste sweeter. If you add a little sweetness to something salty it will taste saltier. (That's why fast food restaurants add sugar to their french fries and why there is salt in ice cream!)
  • A team that is working together well can get more done with less effort than a group  not using teamwork.

PRESENTERS: Remember the mouse magnifier icon means you can click on the image to zoom in/out.

<Body Break> Bring a rock n' roll attitude to that body break. Rock it out people!

Combination Foods

Take a look at this *Activity Sheet about Combination Foods. Each combined set of foods is better than the ingredients for the dish if you ate them separately. Decide what categories of foods the combinations come from.

The links below show the INGREDIENTS for the first 3 combination foods in the worksheet.

Would you rather eat the combination food item or the ingredients for it separately? If you think they taste better in combination, that's synergy!

Pizza

Turkey Sandwich

Taco

Serving Sizes

Before we go look at the worksheet, will you share how much you usually eat of ONE of the following foods? (each responder can pick one food they want to share about)

  • Pizza: how many slices?
  • Mashed potatoes: how much of the plate?
  • Pasta: How big a bowl?
  • French fries: What size of order?
  • Fresh cherries: How many handfuls?

Do you think that's too much, too little or just right?

This *worksheet refers to the 5 food groups but we're just going to look at the three that we know for sure are healthful. Remember that healthful food is whole, natural and NOT processed. It doesn't come from a factory or with extra chemicals.

Look at the serving sizes. How do they compare to the amounts you normally eat of those foods? Are you over-eating, under-eating, or eating a healthful amount?

Serving sizes matter, both for health and synergy. We want to eat as many DIFFERENT foods as possible. Remember that our gut microbes LOVE variety. They don't like to have the same stuff day after day. To have room for a lot of different foods we need to eat reasonable portions of all the different stuff. Here is a graphic that helps us imagine good portions.

Synergy Snacks!

Take a look at *these healthful snack recipes. Do you think you might try these at home sometime? Show them to the peopel you live with and ask if they would like to try them.

Please share your favorite healthful snacks that are combination foods.

Show & Share — Different and Belonging

There are lots of times when we are different from the group we are in. We can be a new person on a job, join a club for the first time, or move to a new neighborhood. Sometimes we fit right in but other times it takes getting used to.

Everyone has been the person who is different and everyone has been part of a group when someone else felt different.  What is it like to be new or different? How do we get used to it? How is it a good experience? Are there ways it can be a difficult experience?

Tomorrow's Show & Share is about DREAM jobs. If you could have any job in the world, what job would you take and why?

Life Skills Discussion Questions

Choose 3-5 questions *on this question list to explore together. At the end of the talk, recap the ideas that the group addressed.

Thematic Conncection — Diversity is a Good Thing

Watch the video about diversity.

Video about Diversity and Inclusion

The people in the video made the following points:

  • Diversity is about appreciating the ways people are different from one another.
  • If we can be ourselves we're more productive.
  • It's the right thing to do.
  • Diversity is reality and inclusion is a choice.
  • More diverse opinions make better decisions.
  • Seeing people like you high up at work inspires you.
  1. Do you agree or disagree with any of these points?
  2. What is diversity to you?
  3. What do you think inclusion means?
  4. Can you think of other comments you want to make about diversity at work?
  5. When you go to a job do you hope you'll see other people who look like you or have the same background as you?
  6. Do you remember your first day at Hope? Did you notice diversity?

Group Censure—Group Bullying

We've all heard about peer pressure, and we know it's hard to stand up to our friends. But there is another kind of pressure called group censure that can be even harder to stand up to.

It's when a group of people make it very hard to be different from them, or to disagree with them. Sometimes this is on purpose and the larger group will actually bully someone into going along with them. Other times they just don't realize that their opinions are hurtful or that they reject people just for being different. Because they are such a majority, they often have power and usually want to keep it.

We learned about the labor and differability rights activists last week. They had to deal with a lot of social censure. But we have it in our own lives too.

  1. Have you ever felt like you couldn't be yourself around a group or in a place?
  2. Have you ever wondered if you may have made someone feel rejected  just because they are different?
  3. Are there people that make you feel uncomfortable? Why do you think they have that effect on you?

Being human is not easy. It changes every day. One thing we can do to make it easier all around is find ways to appreciate our differences and learn to make room for everyone's experience.
