Today happens to be...

George Washington's Birthday

Check In & Introduce the Week (10 min)

Theme for the week: Relationships in Real and Digital Spaces

Skill for the week: Kindness online

Show & Share (10-min)

Got any lucky objects or clothes? Tell us how they came into your life and

why they are lucky.

Tomorrow's Show & Share: Show us your favorite keepsake from childhood. What does it

make you remember?

Plan Your Week (5-10 min)

PRESENTERS: Review the Weekly pages and remind everyone we are coming up on the end of the month. Guide participants to plan out their week. See if anyone can use the stamp tool in the annotation menu. It's a good one for calendar stuff.

Planner pages for this week

  1. Enter any appointments and don't-forget items
  2. Any celebrations to mark? Just because we can't throw someone a birthday party doesn't mean we can't call or send a message. Write it down.
  3. Set a goal or goals for the week ahead
  4. What are your priorities? family? friends? fun? chores? Finance? Health? It's your life. Make it great.

            <Body Break>

Thematic Activity (10-15 min)

PRESENTERS: Use the links below to guide a discussion on social media tools, who uses them, how and why. Don't encourage or discourage use. Instead help people state what they offer and decide their own level of interest in it.

(remember to click on graphics with the magnifier pointer to make them bigger and use CTRL and the + sign to enlarge images that don't offer a magnifier pointer)

Do you recognize it?

Look at these icons of different social media tools.

How many can we name?

Presenters: If you aren't sure of the name float a mouse over the logo and wait for the tool tip to tell you the name.

Now that we know their logos, let's look at the most popular ones  in this infographic.

  1. Which one has the MOST users?
  2. Which one do people use for almost an hour every day?
  3. Which one is the OLDEST?
  4. Which ones do any of your group know or use?

Optional Fun Video

Explains how big a billion really is as a number.

The Good and the Bad of Social Media

People want others to like them. Social media is a way for people to say what they think even if no one asked them. This video about HOW social media affects student athletes talks about the difficulty of being out in a public place where everyone can say whatever they want.

  1. What do you think about the effect of social media on mental health?
  2. If you use social media, how do you comment to others?
  3. What kinds of comments do you get FROM others?
  4. If something is "trending" does that mean it's good or important? If not, what does "trending" mean?

Skill Builder (5-10 min)

PRESENTERS: Guide the discussion to help participants understand that their own social media activities may be evaluated by others and that they can evaluate the behavior of others online too.

  • How we behave on social media creates a record that other people can go look up.
  • Sometimes, some people, forget that social media works that way and they post things online that others see as "red flags."
  • A red flag is something that alerts us to a danger or a possible problem.

Imagine you are a business owner looking to hire a new employee. You want someone who will be responsible, honest and help you take good care of your customrs. You interview a few people who might be good but when you look up their social media you find these things. Do you still want to hire them?

  1. ALL their profiles are private and nothing is visible to the public. You can see their name but they show nothing at all to the public view.
  2. You see a number of photos in which they are taking an illegal substance.
  3. They have a website but it's not very interesting.
  4. You found a bunch of youtube videos where they are yelling angry opinions at the camera for a long time.
  5. They have a TON of pictures of their pets and food choices.
  6. You found a resume on their profile that is completely different than they one they gave you and you aren't sure which one is true.
  7. They have bad spelling in their posts.

Thematic Activity 01 (5-10 min)

PRESENTERS: Read the story as a group. Use the questions below to tie the story to the theme for the week. Use the question set that was sent home to go further if your group is into it.

            <Body Break>

  1. The story explains how Cassie and Kate know each other. What level of friendship do you think they have? Very close friends, acquaintances, community members or something else?
  2. Cassie clearly did not have any relationship to the man at her work who tried to kiss her. What word did she use that describes that?
  3. Rya, an independent adult, talks to the guy at the gym. It's a public place and she is with friends. She can get to know him very slowly by only meeting him at the gym or with friends for a long time before becoming better friends. What are some of the differences between Rya talking to that guy and talking to someone we don't know online?

PRESENTERS: Point out that peole online

  • can hide who they really are
  • are not in public view of other people
  • can potentially locate information about us that we did not freely give them

LSS Question Set 1*

Skill Builder (5-10 min)

PRESENTERS: Using the Life Skills Story guide the conversation to appreciating that odd is just something different than we are used to, or what we would do or like.

Let's look at these pictures of clothing from different countries that may seem ODD to us. If you saw someone wearing one of these outfits in the regular community you would certainly notice them. What are some kind ways to think about people who look or dress differently from us?

Here are some odd posts that have been on social media. What is the kind way to respond if someone posts something you find UNappealing or UNiteresting?

Oprah in a Slice of Bread

Abraham Lincoln on a bandage

Holding Feet

Strange Kid's Face

PRESENTERS: end on the awareness that the kind response to social media things you don't like or care about is to do NOTHING. Only respond to the things that you can say kind or positive things about.

               <Body Break>

Survival Math & Social Justice (5-10 min)

Did you know that doing raises as percentages is unfair to the people who make the least money?

Use this interactive raise calculator to answer the question below.

PRESENTERS: Enter the % increase first  then change the hourly rates for each person to determine the values.

Three people work at a company.

  • Devary is the owner and pays themselves $100 per hour.
  • Dina is the night manager and gets paid $35 per hour.
  • Lisa is the custodian and gets paid $16 per hour.

Devary gets a new contract that is going to allow a 13% increase for EVERYONE.

  1. Calculate how many DOLLARS more each month each person will get.
  2. Is it fair for the person earning the least to get the smallest raise? Why or why not?
  3. What are other ways to do raises? What is fair or unfair about those ideas?

This video is about the modern problem with the world economy. Not very exciting but explains the problem really clearly.

Tell a Fairy Tale Day

Some fairy tales are out of date and no longer talk about values we think are important today. That's when creative people re-write them.

For example, in the stories where the princess ALWAYS has to get married at the end can be retold so the princess goes off on an adventure of her own. OR, stories where a character who is treated as ugly and then becomes beautiful, are retold to show that the characters who mistreat someone for their appearance are actually the ugly ones. What fairy tale would you choose to re-tell?
